ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN
Super clean engine bay and underside
I have just PERSONALLY carried out a FULL engine service as per BMW’s prescribed schedule. This INCLUDED the all important checking and if needs be re-shimming of the valve clearances.
NOTE! This forms part of the schedule for BOTH Insp 1 and Insp 2 Services.
However, many garages/owners skimp on doing this either due to the costs involved or they don’t have the kit or they just don’t even know that it needs to be done or why! I evem found out from one garage where the owner himself apparently owns a Z3M with the S54 engine but wasn’t even aware of it himself!
I decided to do this myself:
Firstly, because I couldn’t find anywhere locally - even my local BMW Main-dealer failed to get back to me!
The only place that I found online that put a really convincing case forward that they would do it properly was Redish Motorsport, in Bristol, but they are far too far from me.
Secondly, although it turns out not to be a particularly difficult task, is a rather time-consuming and hence expensive procedure to have done. It only requires a couple of special tools ( a magnetic tool from BMW, a digital calipers and a big 32mm socket to turn the engine at the crank).
Thirdly, I wanted it “done right”.
I have a written record of all the clearances and photo and videographic evidence of me doing the procedure!
The engine has:
New BMW Spark Plugs
New crush-washer to the banjo bolt you need to undo to so the above
New approved Coolant + Distilled Water
New Castrol 10W60 oil
New Oil Filter with new crush washers and rubber o-rings
The Gearbox has new approved Castrol Transmax 75W-90 Fluid
The Rear M-Differential has new approved Castrol Transmax Slip 75W-140 Fluid and two new drain and filler plug bolts and o-rings, as prescribed by the schedule.
New engine Air-Filter
New Cabin micro-filter
New Screen-washer fluid
New DOT 4 Brake Fluid
This is ALL with written and photo documentation!
